Historical Summary
Steve Kapptie had been an Argo Futures Group client for an extended period before becoming a professional commodity trading advisor. His personal trading performance, consistency, and discipline drew attention from personnel at the firm's clearing relationship and from other industry professionals who were able to observe his daily profit-and-loss activity.
The quality of his trading prompted questions about whether he was already operating as a professional manager or was simply an unusually accomplished individual client.
Recognizing an opportunity to help introduce an emerging manager, Argo approached Kapptie about establishing a formal commodity trading advisory business. Argo offered to sponsor and support his introduction to the managed-futures marketplace through an initial period of exclusivity, after which he would also be able to develop capital relationships through other offices and industry channels.
This became Argo Futures Group's first organic emerging-manager collaboration: a relationship that began with an individual client whose performance and discipline developed into a professional money-management opportunity.
Historical Significance
This collaboration illustrates an important element of Argo Futures Group's managed-futures model. The firm did not limit itself to promoting already-established managers. It also identified trading talent within its existing relationships, evaluated the discipline and consistency of that talent, and helped qualified individuals transition toward professional registration and capital management.
The Kapptie collaboration represents the earliest documented example of Argo helping an exceptional individual trader develop into an emerging CTA relationship.
